What FEMA Aid Is
After a big storm, the federal government can approve disaster aid for hurt areas. If Mobile County is in a federal disaster order, home owners and renters with storm damage may get help from FEMA. This help can pay for short-term housing, urgent home fixes that make a home safe to live in, and key personal items the storm ruined.
FEMA aid is not a loan. You do not pay it back. But it is not full insurance either. It covers basic needs only. And it starts only after a federal disaster order covers your county.
Do not wait for your insurance claim to end before you apply. The two tracks run at the same time.
Three Ways to Apply
- Online. Go to DisasterAssistance.gov. This is fastest for most people.
- By phone. Call the FEMA Helpline at 1-800-621-3362. TTY: 1-800-462-7585. Mornings tend to be less busy.
- In the FEMA app. Apply from your phone. The app also sends storm alerts for your area.
What You Need First
Get these ready before you start:
- Your Social Security number
- The address of the hurt home
- A phone number where FEMA can reach you
- A short note on what the storm damaged
- Your home, flood, or renter insurance info
- Bank account and routing numbers for direct deposit (faster than a mailed check)
What Happens Next
FEMA looks over your form. They may set up a home visit. An inspector comes to see the damage. The inspector does not set your aid amount. They just write down what they see.
Then FEMA mails a choice letter. It says what you got and how to appeal. If they say no, appeal anyway. Many first no answers turn to yes when home owners send missing papers.
Other Federal Help
- SBA disaster loans. The Small Business Administration gives low-cost disaster loans to home owners and renters too, not just firms. See sba.gov.
- Disaster jobless aid. If the storm cost you your job, you may get Disaster Unemployment help. File through the Alabama Department of Labor.
- D-SNAP. After a declared emergency, Alabama may offer food aid. Watch mydhr.alabama.gov for news.
Beware of FEMA Scams
FEMA never charges to apply. FEMA never asks for cash to speed up your case. Anyone who does is a crook. Real FEMA inspectors carry official ID. They never ask for your bank login.
