Know Alabama's License Law
Alabama has clear license rules. Home jobs over $10,000 need a state home builder license. Roof jobs over $2,500 need a roofer's license. After a governor's emergency order, unlicensed storm work meant to cheat victims can be charged as a felony. The state board says it works with police to charge storm crooks.

Red Flags
- Door knocks with "today only" deals. Honest pros do not need your name on the porch. Rush pricing is a classic storm-chaser move.
- Cash up front, or full pay before work. Never pay it all before the job is done. A fair down pay with the rest tied to steps is normal. Full pay up front is not.
- No license, no local address, out-of-state plates. Storm chasers roll in from other states after each hurricane. Ask for the Alabama license number and a local address. Then check both.
- No written deal. A handshake and a card are not a deal. You need the work scope, goods, price, pay plan, and start and end dates in writing.
- They offer to "handle" your claim. Be wary of any who want to talk to your insurer for you, or want you to sign over claim rights. Talk to your insurer on your own.
How to Hire Right
- Get three written quotes. Compare the work scope, not just the price. Cheap bids often skip the costly parts.
- Check past jobs near you and ask for names you can call.
- Get it in writing, with who pulls permits.
- Pay by check or card. Never cash. Tie pay to done steps.
